Early July 2002 - How do I build a punt? Having decided to buid a punt, the first thing I did was look for punt building plans on the web. The site I hit on that looked good was Selway Fisher, who had plans for a 20' Oxford punt, at a cost of £35. So I bought the plans, and worked on how to scale the punt down from its monster size to something more in the region of 15', which is a suitable length for a Cambridge punt.
This scaling down meant I ended up with lots of 0.5 and 0.25 mm measurements, which wasn't good. And then, one day I browsed the Selwyn Fisher site again, and found that they had just drawn up some plans for a smaller punt. So I ordered them - the £35 that I had to pay out again was made up for in the fact that it used less wood (I'd not worked out how to fit the 20' punt onto 4 sheets). But it was a bit annoying. Anyway, maybe I'll build a bigger one after I've finished the small one. Here are the materials requirements:
DF = Douglas fir. Some of the pieces above are cut up into smaller pieces to make the boat. |
